Apple and Google Wallet loyalty cards for cannabis retail

A loyalty pass gives customers a convenient way to find their membership at checkout. It is different from a payment card in Apple Pay or Google Pay, and it needs a working loyalty program and issuer setup behind its design.

PURP builds cannabis retail software. This guide helps you connect the tools and daily work behind a cannabis business.

A loyalty pass identifies membership; the POS remains the place staff confirm the customer and current program information.

Separate a loyalty pass from payment

Apple Wallet and Google Wallet can hold a retailer’s loyalty or membership pass. A pass may identify a member or display program information; it is not proof of age or identity. Staff still follow the store’s usual age-check process. A loyalty pass also does not mean a terminal accepts Apple Pay or Google Pay; those are separate payment experiences.

When a retailer offers a pass, customers follow the store’s Add to Wallet link or instructions, open the saved pass and show its QR code at checkout for membership lookup. Apple and Google explain how people add and use passes in their Apple Wallet pass guide and Google Wallet loyalty card guide. The available customer flow depends on the pass and supported device.

Decide what the pass helps customers do

PURP Wallet Cards give customers a branded membership pass with a QR code and points or credit information. Choose a clear customer action: present the pass for membership lookup, then let the register show staff the account and current program details. Decide how staff help when the pass cannot be scanned.

The pass may show points and store-credit information together; explain what each label means and do not ask customers to add them as separate balances. Wallet updates can lag behind a change in the register, so staff should check the customer’s current account when the amount matters.

PURP branded Wallet Cards are a PURP+ add-on. The pass supports loyalty and membership; Apple Pay and Google Pay are separate payment experiences that depend on provider and terminal support.

Help customers get and use the pass

Send the branded email invitation or display your store’s signup QR. Customers add their membership pass to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet and keep it on their phone. At checkout, they open the membership pass and present the QR code so staff can look up the right loyalty account. Keep another supported account lookup available for customers who do not use a wallet.

Test the customer journey on current iPhone and Android devices your stores see: add the pass, show its QR at the register, and confirm that staff can find the correct member. If the pass displays program information or a points or credit balance, explain what those labels mean and where customers can ask questions.

When branding, program details or customer instructions change, review the pass and the store’s invitation wording. Wallet updates can take time to appear, so tell customers that the register is where staff check current account information.

Check customer access by market

Customers in Canada, the United States, Thailand and Germany may use different devices, account settings and languages. Confirm issuer requirements and test Apple and Google flows with devices available to your stores. Provide an alternative for customers who do not use a supported wallet.

For multiple countries or store brands, confirm which program identity applies at each location. Review privacy and customer communication practices with local advisers before launch.

Test the customer journey

  • Enroll a test customer and add the pass using the intended instructions.
  • Scan or look up membership at the register and confirm the right account.
  • Complete a test loyalty action; compare the register record and pass display.
  • Test a delayed update, unreadable code and customer without a compatible phone.
  • Confirm who manages issuer setup, program edits and support questions.

Ask a cashier to explain the experience in one sentence. If they confuse the loyalty pass with a way to pay, revise the instructions.
