Cannabis POS payment terminals: what to confirm
A payment terminal is part of a larger arrangement: merchant approval, account configuration, location, currency, terminal model and POS connection. Confirm that complete setup before expecting a register to accept payments.
PURP builds cannabis retail software. This guide helps you connect the tools and daily work behind a cannabis business.
Approval and readiness depend on your merchant account, market, currency and exact terminal. Confirm those items together before rollout.
Map the whole payment setup
Write down the business and store location, currencies, payment provider, merchant account, terminal model and network connection. Ask who owns each part and who resolves onboarding or settlement questions. Clarify how the register and terminal communicate: does POS send the amount, does a cashier enter it, or is another approved process used?
Confirm which tenders, refunds, voids, tips or split payments your account supports. A contactless symbol or model number alone does not prove that a POS connection is available. Have the provider explain settlement timing, fees, statements, chargeback contacts and how staff can identify an interrupted transaction result.
Check provider and country fit
Merrco is PURP’s current integrated payment option. Merrco describes its cannabis payment offering for licensed producers and dispensaries across Canada. That public offering does not establish processing availability in the United States, Thailand or Germany, or approval for a particular retailer. Read Merrco’s cannabis offering, then ask about your exact country, merchant account, currency and terminal.
Before buying equipment, have the payment provider confirm the merchant account, terminal model, store assignment, supported POS actions and support contact. If you operate in multiple countries, check each location and account separately; availability in one market does not carry over automatically.
Rehearse payment outcomes
Use a provider-approved test setup. Run a test sale, decline, cancellation and expected refund. Observe what the cashier sees and where they find the final outcome. Ask what to do if the terminal processes payment but the register has not displayed a result.
Train staff to check the transaction record and follow the provider’s reconciliation process before trying again. Test network interruptions only in an approved environment. Do not assume the register can store a card payment for later or automatically retry it; ask the provider what actions are allowed and what each terminal state means.
Plan across stores and currencies
Canada, the United States, Thailand and Germany differ in provider availability, currency and merchant onboarding. Confirm the local business entity and store configuration with the provider at each location. Document which account, terminal model and currency apply at each site.
Ask if a terminal can move between registers or locations, who can reassign it and what happens when a store changes provider. Keep settlement and reconciliation steps specific to each account. Do not assume one terminal or merchant relationship can serve a different country or currency.
Bring these questions to setup
- Is this cannabis retail business approved in this country and currency?
- Which merchant account, store and exact terminal model are approved?
- Which sales, refunds, voids and split payments work through this POS setup?
- What should staff do when terminal and register outcomes differ?
- Who handles settlement, terminal faults and urgent payment support?
Review the PURP POS workflow and prepare with our buyer’s guide. Include market, currency, provider and terminal details when you contact PURP. Your payment provider answers account-specific terms; PURP confirms the register connection for the exact setup.
