Cannabis POS receipt printers and cash drawers
A receipt printer and cash drawer may look simple, but their connection to the register determines what staff can do. Check the model, connection, software path and physical wiring together before standardizing a counter.
PURP builds cannabis retail software. This guide helps you connect the tools and daily work behind a cannabis business.
Model, firmware, connection and register software all affect the result. Test a sale receipt and drawer action under the intended staff roles.
Choose the job the printer must do
List what your store prints: sale receipts, returns, customer copies, drawer slips or designed receipts with a barcode or QR code. Note paper width, counter space, print volume, cutter behavior, replacement-roll availability and where staff can reach the printer. Record the exact model, firmware, interface, power supply and any required cable or interface.
Two printers from one family may use different commands or connection options. Ask which software path sends the print job. Operating-system drivers, browser printing, local USB or LAN services, and a printer cloud service are different routes with different requirements. A laptop browser test does not confirm behavior in a managed tablet or Android register.
Understand the connection path
For USB, check the register port, cable and exact supported setup. For network printing, check the store network and the printer connection the register supports. Cloud printing is a separate path with its own enrollment and model requirements. A connector that fits, or a printer visible on the network, does not prove a sale receipt will work.
Designed receipts can include a logo, barcode or QR code, so print the actual document your staff expect to use. Check its content, size, readability and cut. If a job’s result is unclear, staff need the documented recovery steps before attempting it again.
What PURP connects to
PURP has an existing Star CloudPRNT printing path. Star’s mC-Print3 model and part-number list shows variants with different interfaces, so the exact suffix and part number matter. Some newer models list CloudPRNT Next (MQTT); that listing alone does not establish support for that mode in PURP. Share the full model, firmware and intended connection with PURP, then test the exact setup.
Other paths depend on the equipment and current software release. Windows can use an installed-printer setup when the exact model and driver are qualified. Android USB or LAN printing and iPad network printing depend on release, printer model, firmware and connection; have PURP check the combination before purchase or rollout. Manufacturer features such as USB-C or tablet networking do not establish that PURP supports that route.
Epson Server Direct Print, Star WebPRNT and Epson ePOS-Print direct-network connections can handle setup or occasional prints in documented configurations, but these paths do not currently support PURP’s designed receipt. The browser’s print dialog is a separate receipt fallback. If you need a branded receipt, barcode or QR layout, choose a designed-receipt path confirmed for your device and printer.
| Connection route | What to confirm for your counter |
|---|---|
| Star CloudPRNT | PURP supports designed receipts through its existing CloudPRNT connection. Confirm the exact printer model, firmware and register setup. |
| Windows installed printer | Use the PURP Windows printing service and a qualified model/driver combination. Confirm designed-receipt support in the installed release. |
| Android USB or LAN | Star SDK printing depends on the Android release, printer model and connection. Confirm the tested combination and receipt format before rollout. |
| iPad network printer | Confirm the exact network ESC/POS model and PURP release. A manufacturer’s iPad claim alone does not establish a tested PURP combination. |
| Epson Server Direct Print | Setup and occasional prints are supported in documented configurations; PURP designed receipts currently require another path. |
| Star WebPRNT / Epson ePOS-Print | These direct-network routes handle setup or occasional prints in documented configurations; designed receipts currently require another path. |
| Browser print dialog | A receipt fallback in a full browser. Check the printed result; this route does not open the cash drawer. |
This is a reference to software connection routes, not a model certification list. Record the printer’s full model and interface, register OS, PURP version, receipt type and test date when confirming a setup.
Check the cash drawer separately
Record the drawer model, till size, lock, mounting, connector and interface. Many drawers open through a printer-controlled cable, so compatibility depends on both the drawer and the printer path. Check the specifications and physical wiring with the POS provider and hardware supplier.
Test the intended actions using normal employee permissions. Confirm which tender opens the drawer, whether no-sale opening is allowed, and how the register records it. These depend on store policy and role setup. Ask what staff should do if a sale completes but the drawer does not open. Cash reconciliation and access policy remain part of the workflow.
Account for local operating needs
Paper formats, supplier availability, power and service coverage can vary across Canada, the United States, Thailand and Germany. Confirm consumables and repair support where each store operates. Document approved printer, cable, drawer and register combinations separately for each region.
Ask who handles a print fault, who handles a drawer fault and which supplier stocks replacement parts. Decide where a spare can be used safely; test any model substitution with the actual register before putting it on a lane.
Test the complete checkout
- Print a normal test receipt and verify store details, amounts and readability.
- Print each return, barcode, QR or designed document staff will use.
- Complete a test tender; check drawer opening, permissions and record.
- Reconnect the printer using documented recovery steps.
- Repeat on the exact production device, firmware and connection.
Review the hardware guide, the scanner guide and PURP register workflow. Ask PURP to confirm the supported route for the exact model and connection. A listing or test page is a starting point; a full checkout test is the useful evidence for staff.
