Cannabis gift cards: setup, sale and redemption

A useful gift card program is easy for staff to issue and customers to redeem, with a clear record of its value. Decide how cards are funded, delivered, checked and reconciled before offering them in store.

PURP builds cannabis retail software. This guide helps you connect the tools and daily work behind a cannabis business.

Keep one clear issuing retailer and currency, then rehearse the full funding and redemption record before selling to customers.

Define the program first

PURP gift cards are issued by a company-wide program in one currency and can be used at any active location operated by that same company. They do not work at another company, and the balance does not convert to a different currency. Decide who can buy a card, which values are offered and who can adjust one.

Set the sales channels and customer support path. Gift card value is different from loyalty points and store credit, so explain those products separately in staff training and customer copy.

PURP supports physical and emailed gift cards without the paid Wallet Cards add-on. Wallet Cards provide a separate loyalty-pass experience.

Choose physical or emailed delivery

PURP supports physical and emailed gift cards. Physical cards need an inventory plan: who stores them, how staff select one, how the code is entered or scanned, and what happens if a card is damaged. Keep unissued cards separate from cards that already carry value.

An emailed card needs a correct recipient address, a clear message and a recovery process for typos or delivery problems. Decide how staff find the card if the customer cannot show the message. Protect card codes as stored value and limit administrative access to people who need it.

Use a test card to check artwork and receipt details: amount, retailer identity, support contact and instructions. The card’s value belongs to its issuing program and currency. Have qualified local advisers review any customer terms before printing or sending them.

Plan funding, sale and redemption

Rehearse funding a card, selling it, then checking its available value before redemption. PURP supports gift card funding and redemption, with optional reloads where enabled for the program. A reload adds value to that card’s existing program balance; it does not change the issuing retailer or currency.

For example, in your program’s currency, a 50-value card with 18 redeemed has 32 remaining. If your program allows a 20 reload, the available value becomes 52. This simple example is only card arithmetic; follow the terms approved for your program.

Train staff to check the card in the POS rather than relying on a paper note or old receipt. Verify the card and amount before finishing the sale. Decide how to handle unreadable codes, a disputed balance, an interrupted checkout and lost-card requests. Reconcile card funding, redemption and outstanding value in your normal review, and ask your accountant or adviser how to classify and report the program.

Set clear customer terms

Gift card rules vary by jurisdiction and by how a card is sold and used. Do not copy an expiry, fee, cash-redemption or promotion rule from another country. Have qualified local advisers review terms for each market, including Canada, the United States, Thailand or Germany.

Make the basics easy to find: issuing retailer, currency, how to check value, where to get help and applicable limits. If a promotion includes a gift card, state how it works and have the terms reviewed. Staff should know where approved terms live and when to refer a question to a manager.

Rehearse the full card lifecycle

  • Create a test card and verify issuing retailer and currency.
  • Sell it, confirm the receipt and inspect its value in the POS.
  • Redeem part of the value; check remaining value and reporting.
  • Test an unreadable code, interruption and documented support path.
  • Confirm permissions for sale, lookup, reload if enabled and replacement.

Use test data and an approved environment. Keep written steps with cashier training and repeat them when card format, configuration or store participation changes.
