Cannabis POS offline selling: prepare, sell and reconnect
An internet interruption should come with a familiar plan. Prepare the register, accept the available offline tenders and keep a clear record from the customer’s payment through to the synchronized sale.
PURP makes cannabis retail software. Plan offline selling around your prepared register, eligible tenders and locally approved operating procedures.
PURP supports offline selling on a prepared register. Get the shift, product information and eligible tender setup ready while connected, then review saved sales when the connection returns.
Prepare the register before an outage
Offline selling starts while the store is online. The register needs the correct employee and location, an open cash shift, current cached product and pricing information, and working local storage. Preparation belongs to that register and shift; opening another device is not a substitute for preparing it.
Include offline readiness in the opening routine. Confirm that the register is ready, staff understand the permitted selling window and the intended products are available. Prices and tax calculations use the prepared information, so changes made elsewhere during an outage do not become fresh instructions for a disconnected register.
Prepare a short outage checklist: which register to use, which tenders staff can accept, who handles questions and how to resume the normal workflow. Offline preparation has a limited validity period. Follow the register’s availability rather than assuming a morning check permits unlimited selling.
Choose eligible tenders deliberately
Plan offline selling around approved cash and eligible cash-equivalent non-card tender arrangements for your setup. Confirm what the prepared register actually offers. A custom tender name alone does not make it eligible: the arrangement must be suitable for reconciliation in the cash drawer and permitted for the employee.
Card authorization is separate. Losing the store’s connection does not turn a card request into an approved offline payment. If a terminal is involved, follow the payment provider’s confirmed process and check the actual payment outcome. Do not record a pending or uncertain card payment as cash. Our payment terminals guide explains the questions to settle with your provider.
Follow one sale from cash to saved record
Imagine the connection drops halfway through an afternoon shift. The prepared register is available for offline cash selling. A customer’s eligible basket totals C$42.75 using the saved pricing and tax information. They hand over C$50; the cashier confirms C$7.25 change and saves the transaction.
PURP retains the sale details, amount received and change in a durable local record before clearing that sale’s cart. The continuity receipt records the locally captured transaction while upload is pending. That is a useful customer and cashier record; the final synchronized sale and receipt follow after reconnecting.
The cashier can then serve the next customer using the available workflow. If the saved sale reappears after a restart, inspect its existing record rather than charging the customer again. Keep the register’s stored data intact: clearing application or browser data is not an outage recovery step.
Reconnect and review the outcome
When connectivity returns, PURP syncs saved transactions. Review pending sales until each is complete, and follow the provided next step for anything needing attention.
Use a reconnect checklist:
- Restore a stable connection and review the register’s pending offline sales.
- Confirm which records have completed and which still need attention.
- Follow up on a needs-review result using the retained transaction evidence; do not create a replacement sale to hide it.
- Reconcile cash received, change and saved sales against the original shift.
- Check the completed sales and receipts before closing the investigation.
The original shift matters even if synchronization finishes later. Keep the outage’s records together and use consistent dates and locations when reviewing sales and tender reports.
Rehearse with your actual equipment
Before relying on offline selling during a rush, practise an approved test sale, connection loss, register restart and reconnect. Check the local record, receipt options, final result and cash reconciliation. Include a pending or needs-review case so the team knows who owns follow-up.
Also review stock after an outage. A cached quantity is not a live reservation across other registers and online sales; simultaneous activity can require reconciliation. Confirm the intended workflow for your products and location, and test your receipt equipment with the POS hardware checklist. Explore PURP point of sale to plan the rest of the register day.
